City Council:
AN ORDINANCE TO RENAME 4TH STREET PARK
AS "GUS 'THE WIZARD' WILLIAMS PARK"
Whereas, in a letter dated February 24, 2025, the City Councilman requested legislation to authorize the official renaming of 4th Street Park, located at 53-69 West 4th Street, Mount Vernon, NY, to "Gus 'The Wizard' Williams Park."; and
Whereas, the City of Mount Vernon recognizes the importance of honoring individuals who have made significant contributions to the community and beyond; and
Whereas, Gus "The Wizard" Williams, born on October 10, 1953, in Mount Vernon, New York, is a distinguished professional basketball player who has brought pride and inspiration to the residents of Mount Vernon; and
Whereas, Mr. Williams honed his skills at Mount Vernon High School, leading the team to a state championship in 1971, and went on to have a celebrated professional career in basketball, earning multiple accolades and demonstrating exceptional leadership, skill, and sportsmanship; and
Whereas, 4th Street Park has a rich basketball heritage, serving as a nurturing ground for athletes, attracting scouts from major colleges, and fostering the development of numerous talented players, including Gus Williams; and
Whereas, renaming 4th Street Park as "Gus 'The Wizard' Williams Park" would serve as a fitting tribute to his legacy and an enduring source of pride and inspiration for the community; and
Whereas, the City of Mount Vernon seeks to commemorate Mr. Williams' achievements by holding a renaming plaque ceremony at the park with the presence of local, County, and State officials, as well as media coverage and community engagement; Now, Therefore, Be It Ordained
The City of Mount Vernon, in City Council convened, does hereby ordain and enact:
