A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF MOUNT VERNON, NEW YORK,
HONORING THE REMARKABLE LIFE, ENDURING
LEGACY, OF MS. SYLVIA L. TYREE
Whereas, the Mount Vernon City Council joins with the family, friends, and the entire Mount Vernon community in mourning the passing of Sylvia L. Tyree, a devoted resident, community advocate, and civic leader, who departed this life on September 24, 2026; and
Whereas, Sylvia L. Tyree was a dedicated resident of the City of Mount Vernon whose life reflected a deep commitment to the well-being, dignity, and advancement of her fellow residents and the community she called home; and
Whereas, Ms. Tyree served as a member of the Mount Vernon Police Reform Committee, where she contributed her voice, experience, and perspective to meaningful discussions and initiatives addressing public safety, accountability, equity, and the relationship between law enforcement and the community; and
Whereas, her commitment to Mount Vernon extended beyond her service on the Police Reform Committee to her involvement with community-based organizations and initiatives, including the Levister Towers Community Development Corporation, through which she demonstrated her steadfast belief in community engagement, advocacy, and collective responsibility; and
Whereas, Sylvia L. Tyree exemplified the principles of civic responsibility and community service, understanding that positive and lasting change is achieved when individuals are willing to become engaged, speak on behalf of others, and work toward the betterment of their community; and
Whereas, through her advocacy, service, and dedication to the residents of Mount Vernon, Ms. Tyree leaves behind a lasting legacy of civic engagement and community involvement that will forever remain a part of the history and fabric of the City of Mount Vernon and serve as an inspiration to future generations; and
