A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF MOUNT VERNON, NEW YORK
RECOGNIZING THE SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP
OF
DISTRICT ATTORNEY ALVIN L. BRAGG. JR.
Whereas, the great City of Mount Vernon, NY, joins together to recognize the service and leadership of District Attorney ALVIN L. BRAGG, Jr.; and
Whereas, District Attorney ALVIN L. BRAGG, Jr. was born and raised in Harlem, New York, and is an advocate for safer communities and a fairer criminal justice system. He recalls being "deeply affected by the criminal justice system," most directly through three gunpoint stops by the NYPD; and
Whereas, in 2021, ALVIN L. BRAGG, Jr. became the first African American elected to serve as the New York County District Attorney; and
Whereas, at the onset of his tenure, ALVIN L. BRAGG, Jr. announced that he would put policies in place to no longer prosecute low-level offenses through his office. He wanted the DA's office to focus on prosecuting serious violent crimes, consider the well-being of crime survivors, and address the underlying causes of criminal behavior. This powerful stance intends to protect everyday New Yorkers from abuses by the powerful and vacating wrongful convictions. He would also oversee the Police Accountability Unit, the Survivor Services Bureau, and the Special Victims Division. He would soon create the first Worker Protection Unit and expand the Hate Crimes and Post-Conviction Justice Unit. With a passion and drive to make the criminal justice system fairer, DA Bragg would gain worldwide recognition and carve his place in history for leading his office in high-profile cases; and
Whereas, we gather tonight at the Westchester Black Bar Association Gala to honor DA Bragg's lifetime of hard work, courage, and a demand for justice; Now, Therefore, be it
Resolved, that the City Council joins with the citizens of the City of Mount Vernon, NY, the many colleagues, and friends in recognition of the extraordinary work, exemplary commitment, leaders...
