AN ORDINANCE ACKNOWLEDGING AND
CELEBRATING ARBOR DAY/EARTH DAY 2024
IN THE CITY OF MOUNT VERNON
Whereas, by letter dated February 21, 2024, the City Clerk has requested legislation authorizing the acknowledgment and celebration of Earth Day and Arbor Day, which will commence on Monday, April 22, 2024, and conclude on Saturday, April 27, 2024; and
Whereas, Earth Day and Arbor Day are internationally recognized events aimed at promoting environmental awareness and conservation efforts; and
Whereas, trees play a crucial role in mitigating climate change, preserving topsoil, enhancing air quality, providing habitat for wildlife, beautifying our community; and
Whereas, Arbor Day serves as a reminder of the importance of planting and caring for trees to ensure a sustainable environment for future generations; and
Whereas, Earth Day encourages communities to reflect on environmental challenges and take action to protect and preserve our planet;
Whereas, the City of Mount Vernon recognizes the significance of Earth Day and Arbor Day and seeks to promote environmental stewardship and community engagement;
Whereas, the Tree Advisory Board of Mount Vernon is dedicated to enhancing the urban forest and promoting the planting and preservation of trees throughout the city;
Whereas, the celebration of Earth Day and Arbor Day in Mount Vernon will foster a sense of community pride and environmental responsibility among residents; Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved That
The City of Mount Vernon, in City Council convened, does hereby ordain, and enact:
Section 1. Recognition of Earth Day and Arbor Day. The City of Mount Vernon hereby acknowledges and celebrates Earth Day and Arbor Day, which will commence on Monday, April 22, 2024, and conclude on Saturday, April 27, 2024.
Section 2. Purpose of Earth Day and Arbor Day Celebration. The celebration of Earth Day and Arbor Day in Mount Vernon aims to raise awareness about environmental issues, promote tree planting and conservation efforts, and encourage community participation in sustainable practices.
Section 3. Weeklong Celebration. The entire week from April 22, 2024, to April 27, 2024, shall be dedicated to the celebration of Earth Day and Arbor Day in Mount Vernon. Various events, activities, and educational programs will be organized by the Tree Advisory Board and community partners to engage residents in environmental stewardship initiatives.
Section 4. Culminating Event. The celebration of Earth Day and Arbor Day in Mount Vernon will culminate with a special event dedicated to Arbor Day on Saturday, April 27, 2024. This event will include tree-planting ceremonies, educational workshops, and community engagement activities.
Section 5. Implementation. The Department of Parks and Recreation, in coordination with the Tree Advisory Board, shall be responsible for organizing and coordinating the Earth Day and Arbor Day celebrations in Mount Vernon.
Section 6. Effective Date. This legislation shall take effect immediately upon passage and approval by the City Council of Mount Vernon.
