AN ORDINANCE TO RENAME 4TH STREET PARK
AS “GUS ‘THE WIZARD’ WILLIAMS PARK”
Whereas, in a letter dated February 24, 2025, the City Councilman requested legislation to authorize the official renaming of 4th Street Park, located at 53-69 West 4th Street, Mount Vernon, NY, to “Gus ‘The Wizard’ Williams Park.”; and
Whereas, the City of Mount Vernon recognizes the importance of honoring individuals who have made significant contributions to the community and beyond; and
Whereas, Gus “The Wizard” Williams, born on October 10, 1953, in Mount Vernon, New York, is a distinguished professional basketball player who has brought pride and inspiration to the residents of Mount Vernon; and
Whereas, Mr. Williams honed his skills at Mount Vernon High School, leading the team to a state championship in 1971, and went on to have a celebrated professional career in basketball, earning multiple accolades and demonstrating exceptional leadership, skill, and sportsmanship; and
Whereas, 4th Street Park has a rich basketball heritage, serving as a nurturing ground for athletes, attracting scouts from major colleges, and fostering the development of numerous talented players, including Gus Williams; and
Whereas, renaming 4th Street Park as “Gus ‘The Wizard’ Williams Park” would serve as a fitting tribute to his legacy and an enduring source of pride and inspiration for the community; and
Whereas, the City of Mount Vernon seeks to commemorate Mr. Williams’ achievements by holding a renaming plaque ceremony at the park with the presence of local, County, and State officials, as well as media coverage and community engagement; Now, Therefore, Be It Ordained
The City of Mount Vernon, in City Council convened, does hereby ordain and enact:
Section 1. Renaming of 4th Street Park. The park currently known as 4th Street Park, located at 53-69 West 4th Street, Mount Vernon, NY, shall be officially renamed “Gus ‘The Wizard’ Williams Park.”
Section 2. Installation of Signage and Plaque. The Department of Public Works is hereby directed to install appropriate signage reflecting the new name of the park. A commemorative plaque detailing Gus Williams’ contribution shall also be placed within the park.
Section 3. Ceremonial Event. A formal renaming plaque ceremony shall be organized by the City of Mount Vernon, with invitations extended to local, County, and State officials, members of the community, and media representatives. The event shall be announced through social media and news outlets to ensure maximum community participation.
Section 4. Traffic and Safety Measures. The Mount Vernon Auxiliary Police shall be assigned to provide traffic control and ensure the safety of all participants during the renaming ceremony.
Section 5. Effective Date. This Ordinance shall take effect immediately upon passage and approval by the City Council.
