A RESOLUTION DESIGNATING OCTOBER
AS ITALIAN-AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH AND
ESTABLISHING AN ANNUAL ITALIAN
FLAG-RAISING CEREMONY AT CITY HALL
WHEREAS, the City of Mount Vernon is a diverse community shaped by generations of immigrant families who sought opportunity and contributed to the City’s growth and development; and
WHEREAS, Italian immigrants and Italian-American residents have played a significant and enduring role in the economic, cultural, civic, and social advancement of Mount Vernon; and
WHEREAS, Italian-American contributions are evident in the construction of homes and buildings, the establishment of local businesses, participation in professional fields, and service in public, civic, and charitable capacities; and
WHEREAS, Italian-American families strengthened the City through hard work, perseverance, and dedication to community, establishing foundations upon which future generations expanded and prospered; and
WHEREAS, Italian Americans have served the City of Mount Vernon and the United States with distinction through military service, public service, and civic leadership; and
WHEREAS, the history and heritage of Italian Americans constitute an important part of Mount Vernon’s identity and warrant formal recognition and preservation; and
WHEREAS, the month of October is an appropriate time for the City to acknowledge and celebrate the history, culture, and contributions of Italian Americans; and
WHEREAS, the raising of the Italian flag at City Hall serves as an official symbol of the City’s recognition and appreciation of Italian-American heritage; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Mount Vernon hereby designates October of each year as Italian-American Heritage Month; and be it further
RESOLVED, that the City hereby establishes an Annual Italian-American Heritage Month Flag-Raising Ceremony at City Hall to be held each October; and be it further
RESOLVED, that the Italian flag shall be formally raised at City Hall as part of the annual observance, recognizing the historical, cultural, and civic contributions of Italian Americans to the City of Mount Vernon; and be it further
RESOLVED, that the Mayor and/or City Council shall designate the date and time of the annual ceremony, consistent with applicable municipal procedures and flag protocols; and be it further
RESOLVED, that City officials, Italian-American community representatives, descendants of Italian-American families, veterans, civic organizations, educators, students, clergy, business leaders, and members of the public shall be invited to participate in the ceremony; and be it further
RESOLVED, that the City encourages the inclusion of appropriate remarks and activities recognizing generations of Italian Americans who contributed to Mount Vernon’s development, civic life, and cultural heritage; and be it further
RESOLVED, that local schools, libraries, historical societies, cultural institutions, civic associations, and community organizations are encouraged to engage in educational and cultural programming in observance of Italian-American Heritage Month; and be it further
RESOLVED, that the City supports the preservation and sharing of photographs, documents, oral histories, artifacts, and other materials documenting the experiences and contributions of Italian-American families in Mount Vernon; and be it further
RESOLVED, that recognition of Italian-American heritage is acknowledged as part of Mount Vernon’s broader immigrant history and its longstanding tradition of cultural diversity; and be it further
RESOLVED, that a copy of this Resolution shall be entered into the official records of the City of Mount Vernon and distributed to appropriate City departments, Italian-American organizations, historical institutions, schools, libraries, and community groups; and be it finally
RESOLVED, that the City Council proudly recognizes October as Italian-American Heritage Month and establishes the Annual Italian-American Heritage Month Flag-Raising Ceremony at City Hall in honor of the generations of Italian Americans whose contributions helped build and strengthen the City of Mount Vernon.
